I’m in Washington County, just outside of Smyth County
Good info. Thanks!
I work in Alexandria, but live in Stafford. Quantico may be an option, but they have special rules you need to look into. Let me know if you hear of anything else.
hey! My home town back in the day.
Danville here.
There’s the rub.
Yes sir, Alexandria and Lorton, Virginia here. Glad to have stumbled into the PSA Forums! (As if I needed another ADHD distraction in my life, LOL!)
Hey, I live in Alexandria and work in Lorton. One option to seriously consider is getting a WMA annual shooting range pass at the Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area near LaPlata, MD - just across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and heading south on Indianhead Highway a little bit. Takes about half hour from my house, if traffic is good. Great and isolated place to shoot - however, it’s pretty popular at times like any range. It has about 8 to 10 lanes, I am guessing, and I believe it’s a 100-yard range IIRC. Someone can correct me, feel free. There is also a separate area off to the left which allows trap shotgun shooting, which is a cool feature. It is a 5$/visitor daily fee if you don’t go online and order a yearly pass, which I think is like 25$ or something. Anyway this is a good consideration. Not so many tactical ninjas and people looking over your shoulder like at some ranges, IMHO. Good luck!
Any issues with MD’s gun laws? I haven’t looked into it, but I thought they were more restrictive.
Actually, I had been under that impression as well. All the gun chat on our side of the river had always led me to believe that MD wasn’t an option, but I was mistaken. MD has a thriving shooting community, and you as a VA resident are 100% allowed and encouraged by the MD DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources) to hunt and shoot on state public hunting lands, referred to as state WMA’s (Wildlife Management Areas). After researching the long list of available WMA’s closest to Northern Virginia, specifically Alexandria, I discovered Myrtle Grove WMA’s proximity was well within my range. For only 20$ (I just checked my online account) you have a year’s worth of outdoor range time. Yes, there are some seasonal range closures due to hunting season restrictions but all in all a viable option for target shooting practice if you are a NOVA resident. Here’s the state website. Wildlife & Heritage Service Licenses & Permits
Yes, if you look into the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources website you will certainly find information on available public shooting opportunities. Sadly, though Compton is located smack dab between Luray and Front Royal in Page County I don’t see an outdoor range very close to your location. Closest VA state WMA I know of with a seasonally-open public outdoor shooting range is the CF Phelps WMA in Fauquier County. Another downside to this (for some) is that the range, although well-built and under covered roof with nice shooting tables etc. is not open to the public for something like 5 months out of the year - basically April to the end of August. Something to consider!
