On another board I saw someone claiming that after Ft. Hood, manufacturers were forced to put less powder in the round. So pre-2010 5.7 was a faster, hotter round than it is now. Does anyone know if this is actually true? I didn’t think much of the post, but then I saw a box of the ammo the shooter used (SS192, its now discontinued) on Armslist for $250, leading me to believe the op may have been correct.
it is possible.
FN produced and i get confused without looking at a list of all the SS1xx nomenclatured rounds, but it had a black tip iirc, and its only for sale to LEO and what not, supposed to be because its highly Armor piercing of a round, very hot… so thats probably the round you’re seeing, it may very well be the ss192 nomenclature for that round.
Those 192 white box are highly sought after, 198 and all rounds made by Fiocchi were slowed down/neutered a few years back as well iirc. It’s one of the reasons I prefer AAC V-MAX over SS197.
how do we know/ have we researched yet to ensure that the AAC hasnt been Neutered from the original formulas for loading the ss192/198/197/195 and all the other dang numbers they have out there ammo versions for the 5.7?
while i dont have time to watch the video right now, i will soon. thanks for sharing it rufus!
I know I’m late here, but I have my own relevant experiences to add. I bought a Gen 1 FN 57 in 2009. I messaged around at the range with some IIIa vests I had (surplus State Trooper vests) and SS195 and SS192 went right through the soft armor. I haven’t done a follow ups with any of the ammo on the market now,. I’m planning to load my own 5.7 ammo (I’ve been reloading for 10+ years) once I get a good round design, I’ll do a follow up range test.
Well let us know what you come up with.
Speed kills armor. Wound cavities kill humans. Choose your blend.
wow i had bought my 5.7 around that time too.. .when i had gone to FN for the factory tour, which is where i bought my 5.7 at.. .its also how i got the OD Green 5.7 that is evidentially pretty rare.. but yeah, thats great info about the armor.. im curious about the ammo thats out there today, and what you may find out in your tests later. that is wild about how easily the stuff went right th rough that soft armor. i would have thought it would have been a little more difficult to but i guess not considering the velocity that the rounds travel at.
Oh and welcome to the forums @nDjinn !!! we’re glad to have you!
