I used the green slide first, once I saw the chips returned the slide to PSA
because I saw this as a on going issue where alot gets chipped away the
green replacement is on the way then I shoot the black slide yesterday
with similar chip damage. That seems beyond coincidence to me we will
see if it continues to degrade my equipment I won’t be happy even if I could
get refunded at this point I’d be out a ton with all the ammo, holsters and lights
purchased…hope there’s a solution soon.
Green slide has chipped Cerakote I’d think from on the brass the black slide
I thought the same thing as you so I fingernailed it good, but no finish is damaged
from impacts…look at the green slide under magnification the paint again
cratered from impacts and that paint is alot softer than Black SS/QPQ. I’ve only
used that Federal 40gr. from here.
The slides tend to get beat in that area as the brass “leaves” the gun. You could place a piece of Velcro in that area like I do on my 300BO in order to cushion the blow. I also have a couple nicks on the Holosun after +2K rounds of various ammo.
I assume the black slide is QPQ and that resists these impacts much more
than the colored Cerakote which chips, and yes the ejection pattern with the
Federal 40gr. is such that it is woefully close (3/16") to the red dot glass, now I’m
hoping that other ammo changes the trajectory of the spent case…with the Federal
I’m seeing the case extracted out, then as ejected it pivots around the slide opening
flips and the now sharp throat whacks the extractor and or the slide itself and mighty close
to the glass and glass frame, after that it flies 15ft. @ 4p.m.
Tuesday my Sniper green RK-1 gets here and I will at least tape that area until we
find the solution…(thx shotty)
So I ran over to the cabin and shot 5 more rounds (I go slow because neighbors can hear,
rural flowage but not a range) anyway I put some John Deere yellow tape and you can see the
eject pattern varies abit, when it hits where the flat top angles down you probably will lose
paint…the spent cases (AAC-VMAX) this time look scratched but not gouged…I had mentioned
before I thought the case was ejected, flipped and the open sharp throat dove into the finish,
now I’m not sure thats what’s happening…could be the head I guess…have to see a slow-mo.
I poked the hole in tape top center because I didn’t know if it had any venting function and
didn’t care for this moment.
The ODGreen RK1 slide is here, ran perfect (only 6 shots) I’ve
taped the area at risk til PSA offers a solution, hoping it’s just
a spring or ejector mod.
Totally feel you there, guns wear and show blemishes like anything else. My disappointment is that I just didn’t expect my slide finish to start chipping off after the first 23 rounds.
This is totally normal, not concerning at all. …even within the first few rounds. As I’ve written before elsewhere, this happens to lots of guns. And the epoxy coating is just an epoxy paint and you shouldn’t expect it to not chip or get chewed up. It’s neither Diamondium nor Diamondillium. Wouldn’t matter if it were Black Ice coated or any of the other epoxy or “paint coatings” such as duracoat or Brownells branded bake on. It’ll all get chipped and chewed by brass beating against it.
You could probably have it hard chromed but given that the slide is stainless I don’t personally think it’s worth it.
Personally, I got the black slide. It’s still stainless but it’s also QPQ. Still scuffs up.
To be honest, I really don’t see anything to be upset about. At all.
My green slide looks worse than that but it’s also seen quite a few rounds. The holster wear on mine looks way more scuffed on the cerakote than little chips left by ejecting brass. I use mine around acreage on a daily basis and it doesn’t get babied. That said minus a few ammo related problems with AAC VMAX, it’s been 100% reliable.
I have the exact same marks on my sniper green slide and extractor. Emailed warranty , they said it is normal, marks from shells casings. I am not happy with that as the answer.
