These don’t have the BHO followers. I have an AC Unity 30rd mag with the BHO follower and it does, indeed, hold open on an empty mag. The special offers of 20 for $99 use the “soviet” style followers, which aren’t BHO. If you want the BHO feature they run $8.95 for 30rd, $9.95 for 40rd, or $9.95 for Gen 1 30rd and 40rd BHO mags with a window. Again, in my experience, the BHO does work well.
If you like I can post some pictures of my BHO mag, tonight.
I tested out a bunch of AK Mags in my KS47 and had the following results.
Nogo Pile:
Yugo Steel 30 round - Failure to Feed, every try.
KCI 40 round - Amazing Fitment but Failure to Feed, every try.
Romanian Steel 30 round - Failure to Feed, every time.
Needs Fitment Pile:
PSA Waffle Mag - had to force mag release lever back to lock. Functioned flawlessly otherwise.
Good to Go Pile:
Magpul 20, and 30 (gen 2s): Flawless
Bulgarian 30 (Polymer, steel reinforced, slick side): Flawless
Arsenal 5 round (Polymer): Flawless
Anyone have any problems with Steel Mags? The KCIs and Yugos are my junk mags but I was surprised that the Romanian didn’t work either. The malfunctions all looked the same, as if the nose of the bullet over shot the chamber.
Weird, the KCI steel 30rd mags worked flawlessly for me, in fact they make up the majority of my steel mag collection, including my drum and 2 40rd mags.
I have two uppers, I need to compare the feed ramp profiles or something. I have to admit that the way the KCI clicked in, it felt smooth as butter and was very rigid.
I’m officially sold, thanks Rob
Has anyone had issues with the mags falling out while firing? Mine did it with kci and magpul mags. I can hold it up and finish the magazine.
Has not been a problem I heard anyone report. If I were you I would definitely contact Customer Service. PSA stands behind their products and has top notch Customer Service.
Here’s a video showing the BHO on an AC Unity poly magazine. @Beers
Great info RobHolland. I’ll be stocking up for sure.
Right now I’m using chicom without the rib, what I think are Hungarian and both steel and plastic Bulgarian. All of them work flawlessly.
Rob how do you like that prism sight, is that the 3X?
ETA: what 20 round mags is everyone using?
That’s a Sightmark Wolverine red dot, not a prism sight. I do have an astigmatism and have thought about using a prism, but I don’t want magnification since my 10.5’ is for more close up shooting. I have been looking at PA Cyclops microprism, but can never catch them in stock
.
I just had really good luck with some new Bulgarian steel mags today at the range. I still can’t get a successful cycle out of any other steel magazines (Korean, Yugoslavian, Romanian) unfortunately. I tried on both of my uppers so it may be something unique with the geometry of my lower.
Anyway, I only have one random 20 round AK mag which is a Magpul.
When using the KCI is the bolt picking up a round at all? I am just wondering if the chamfered lugs on the bolt are clearing the feed lips of the mag.
They all have the exact same jam. I should have taken a picture of it but I will try to explain. After the first round is fired, the bolt pushes the bullet from the magazine into barrel extension where it gets hung up in maybe a 45 degree angle. The bolt then rides just a little but over the round and is jammed. From my research this is indicative of a weak mag spring or too heavy of a buffer spring but that doesn’t explain why it works in every polymer magazine I’ve tried and now this steel Bulgarian.
Welcome Jacob, I had this happen to me with the PSA AK Poly Waffle Mags. The problem was the magazine was very tight and probably needed a little fitment but have since broken in nicely. They didn’t quite click in right when they were brand new. Actually I don’t know if my mags broke in or maybe my lower broke in but either way they work just fine for me now.
All my PSA waffle mags fit perfectly in my AK……but they were too tight in my KS-47. Just a few strokes with a file to the underside of the lug and they now fit perfectly in my KS-47 and in my AK. The difference is less than 10/1000 of an inch. Don’t go crazy with the file……do a few strokes…test the fit. Do a few more, check it. You will quickly see and feel the fit improving. The PSA Waffle mags are GREAT……They just need a little love and attention to make them perfect.
I have some Croatian steel mags with bolt hold followers, Korean steel and Yugo waffle mags that have issues cycling. The bolt lugs seem to grab the rounds that are closest to the ejection port fine but ride over the rounds that are furthest from the ejection port. My Magpul 10rd works flawlessly though. Anyone got any ideas?
I may try to grind down the left side feed lip to see if the rounds will sit higher. Also need to file the rear locking tab on the Yugo mags.
I had the same issue with the Croatian mags that PSA sells. I just ended up trading them. Sorry. No ideas on how to fix them though.
Same thing happens to me on most steel mags.
