HK pioneered the use of polymer materials in handgun production over 30 years ago with the VP70Z and P9S pistols, utilizing a fiber-reinforced polymer frame strengthened by stainless steel inserts in high-stress areas. The Up's control lever, serving as both a safety and decoking lever, is conveniently frame-mounted, distinguishing it from slide-mounted safeties found in many semi-automatic pistols. Featuring a modified Browning-type action and a patented recoil reduction system, the SUP minimizes recoil impacts on pistol components and reduces perceived recoil forces for the shooter. This system's reliability has been rigorously tested and validated in the HK mark 23 pistol designed for the U.S. Special operations Command. The Up's modular internal component design allows the control lever function to be shifted from left to right to accommodate left-handed shooters.
