Utilize a die to thread both custom and standard barrels for compatibility with recoil compensators. Employ a plug tap to refine existing threads or to tap custom compensators. For unthreaded compensators, drill using a 3-5/64 inches HSS drill bit, then ream to a diameter of 0.551 inches prior to threading with the appropriate tap. Machine barrels to approximately 0.002 inches smaller than the intended thread diameter. A 0.575-40 thread specification is compatible with most commercial, tapered-sleeve or integral cone-style compensators. The 0.581-40 thread specification is consistent with those used on Wilson, Brown and Storm Lake Machine barrels, as well as bushing-style compensators.
