Every gunsmith knows that using a headspace gauge correctly is the most reliable way to measure the length of a rifle chamber. Headspace is the distance from the breech face to the base of the cartridge when the action is closed. Excessive headspace can lead to safety hazards and affect accuracy. For instance, if unsupported brass is fired in a rifle with too much headspace, it might rupture and cause gas to escape backward, similar to rocket exhaust. If a rifle closes on a NOGO gauge, it could mean the chamber has excessive headspace. Generally, gunsmiths adjust a rifle's headspace to fall between the GO and NOGO dimensions.
