Hi. Hoping i can get some advice on what seems like excessive wear on the outside of my dagger barrel after the first 100 rounds. I didnt shoot well when I took it to the range last week for the first time, and after breaking it down to clean it, I noticed a ton of wear all over the outside of the barrel (see pics). My other Dagger has zero barrel markings on the outside, shoots excellent, love it (included a pic of that as well).
Since I only have one other dagger, I dont known if this kind of wear is normal or concerning. Seems concerning at first glance by a newbie, especially when the other dagger I own shoots so well with NO markings whatsoever.
Some folks would be upset about that. I personally see it as a really tight fit that has now “wore in”. Just my personal preference, but i like it.
Did you lube the barrel before shooting?
Geoff
Who hasn’t got 100 rds though all his daggers yet, but I like polished stainless steel barrels, so unlikely to see wear.
It seems like the bigger issue is the pistol not working correctly, which wasn’t really explained. Could the barrel wear be a result of that? Maybe. Although cosmetics aren’t something I’m usually concerned with, the two issues combined would warrant a call to PSA if it was me. If the pistol functioned 100%, I personally wouldn’t care.
I would say excessive wear. I don’t have that much wear on a glock 19 after 25 yrs. My new dagger has a tiny bit of wear on the barrel and zero on the slide. Send PSA a picture and see what they say. If it’s breakin wear, try a black marker and coat the barrel and see if it comes off.
External marks reading-- no marks indicate a loose slide to barrel fit (not ideal), a lot of marks indicate a tight fit, but will become self limiting as the parts mate if the fit is correct, or if you have malfunctions, then it’s too tight…
ok so when you say you didnt shoot well, that doesnt automatically scream malfunctions to me… so can you please elaborate for me?
Smileys on the barrel is usually just a tight fit, and most of my glocks eventually start doing that as time wears on. the more you use the more smileys you get. however all that said, you may be one of the few where all the tolerances have just ended up in a uber tight pistol, and if its causing failure to fire, feed, eject or whatever then we should get you to send it back to psa to check it out. this is of course assuming that your entire dagger is a factory built dagger with all PSA dagger parts, and not one that you built yourself from parts from here and there and everywhere.
Yes, I cleaned and lubed before shooting. Over lubed if anything. I actually wiped off the oil on the barrel to see the current wear. Thats why it looks so dry currently.
@ Verbalkint I did have one failure to feed and two failure to fire (not sure if that was the reman ammo, since i put them back in the mag and they went bang). That coupled with what felt like an inaccurate day makes me worry. My other Dagger shoots so well im kind of surprised by this Daggers performance.
Im going to the range again with better ammo, if same performance and wearing, then I’ll reach out to PSA. Thanks for your thoughts!
@ jbrown9810 and JosPri. Good idea on the marker, nice and thx. There is one spot that looks like its in to the metal, so that deep of wear seems odd. Rubbin is racin kind of thing works for me, which is what @cciman and GuitarGuy are saying. I hope its just wearin, and i need to work it in more. I’ll take it back to the range with my other dagger to compare this time.
Here are pictures of the slide, which seems ok to me but Im new.
ok cool. What i’d do is if you havent already mark your magazines. number them or what not. 2, clean thoroughly the pistol and oil it properly. ensure you’re not limp wristing at all when shooting, I’d use only 1 type of ammo, and it would be 147 grain AAC most likely, and then let’er rip.
if you have any failures to feed/eject that #2 did this or that. make notation about that magazine and swap it out with a mag you havent ran yet… Repeat if happens again … and in the end you should have magazines you know are good to go and some that are sketchy. once you have done that the first time around, run all the mags you know didnt give you any issues so then run them again, and then again, until you either get no errors or you get no more clean magazines.
Best of luck again
Great advice, and I hadnt thought about the magazine variable. I’ll report back as soon as I can get back to the range.
I appreciate everyones input! Have a great day/week all.
Finally got back to the range, and am very glad to report my dagger is functioning well. I used two new 15rd clear magpul magazines this time, new ammo, and had zero issues. It shot where I pointed it, Im pleased. Thank you for all your help identifying the problem! Also should note, I’m not seeing any new wear on the barrel… just cool bite marks. Love these guns, really happy this one is performing nearly as well as my other.
