With all due respect, when your “job” is to review firearms
But that’s not actually his job. I know, I know, that’s what the channel says, that’s what he says, but it’s not. His job is to make content that his viewers want to watch. Looks like he’s nailed it.
“just because his subscribers like it” doesn’t make it ok.
Sure it does. Doesn’t mean that I will like or watch it. If I think that he’s “shilling” or giving softball reviews, then I won’t watch it. It appears that you feel the same way. Cool. There are other gun content 'toobers that I won’t watch because my personal experience contradicts what they’ve said. Yankee Marshal is probably top of that list. Doesn’t mean that he’s doing anything unethical.
Does he have a right to make money, sure, but that’s like saying politicians have a right to make money in their profession as well - even if it’s through insider trading or tax fraud. I mean, hey, if the voters don’t say anything then it’s fine, right?
Making national law and policy is not even close to the same thing as making entertainment content on 'toob.
One other thing I’ve noticed is that most reviewers will reach out and address accusations of bias or be clear and upfront about sponsorships and the like - he also doesn’t do either of those. Says a lot.
Maybe he’s concluded that it isn’t a worthwhile use of his time. My observations are that people accusing someone of being a shill or whatever are “rarely” (i.e.: “never”) convinced so it kinda seems like a waste of effort to me.
There’s plenty of fair and knowledgeable firearm information out there. Watch who you choose - but it’s probably better to be skeptical going in.
At this point, I pretty much only watch reviewers for entertainment. If I’m honestly looking for advice I talk to friends who’ve used the product. If none of my friends have, I’ll try to find a reviewer who’s reviews of other products are close to my own experiences. It’s kinda a way of excluding reviewers. If they give a review of a product that my personal experience contradicts, I know I can safely ignore them.
