Question about buying a gun in a restricted state

WA recently passed a high capacity magazine ban (anything >10 rounds) but there is a huge and ridiculous grandfather clause.

My question is for those who currently live in a restricted state (i.e. CO, VT, MA, NJ, etc.); When you are looking to buy a pistol that only comes with high capacity magazines (lets say a CZ Shadow 2) and the company does not make a “complaint” version - what does your FFL do? Glock, M&P, and Sig for example sell “complaint” or “California Models” of many of their popular guns. Most manufactures do not.

Technically the gun is legal here, but not the magazines that it comes with. Do they mail them back? Keep them for other resale?

Have several firearms that I don’t own that I’ve purchased magazines for ahead of the ban. Now in speaking with a couple of local FFL’s they are all stumped on how this works moving forward.

In Colorado, it varies widely.

Some companies won’t ship or sell anything that exceeds the limit. Some will pull the mags and ship or sell just the gun. Some will substitute magazines.

Example, Bass Pro, Cabela’s, Sportsman’s Warehouse, all large chains are compliant, and will only sell compliant models. Smaller independent gun stores, they have continued business as usual.

Magazine “repair kits” mainly for ARs sold at LGSs are now a thing. It’s just a disassembled 30 magazines for parts. Most guns stores don’t care about the ban. They continue to openly sell guns with standard capacity magazines, replacement standard capacity magazines, and the like.

So far the state has only prosecuted people with prior criminal records caught with illegal magazines. The burden of proof is on the state to prove when you came into possession, not on us.

PSA will ship minus the magazine. They do not replace with a compliant version if the gun is not already compliant. Most manufacturers now have compliant versions and advertise as such.

As an FFL, i have shipped guns to ban states, sans mag.

I have talked to FFLs in ban states. They said if the mag is included, they remove it before transferring it. They claim to toss em.

I’m sure some do. I’m sure some keep them. I’m sure others sell them on GB or in the underground market.
