PSA Expert Guide: Buying a Lever Action in 2025

Lever action rifles have evolved. While we still love the classic wood-stocked deer rifles from Henry and Rossi, the biggest trend we are seeing at Palmetto State Armory right now is the "Modern Tactical" lever gun. These aren't just for show—they are practical tools for hog hunting and home defense.

1. Traditional vs. Tactical: Our Take

  • The Traditionalist: If you want a classic brush gun for deer season, stick with a tube-fed .30-30. It’s lightweight, balances perfectly in one hand, and has taken more deer than any other platform in history.
  • The Modern Hunter: If you plan to run a suppressor or hunt hogs at night, look for the "Dark Series" or "X Models". These feature threaded barrels and Picatinny rails. Pro Tip: A suppressed .357 Mag lever gun is one of the quietest setups you can own.

2. Caliber Cheat Sheet

.357 Mag / .38 Spl Cheapest to shoot. Perfect for training and suppressed home defense.
.30-30 Win The "Goldilocks" round. manageable recoil, excellent inside 200 yards.
.45-70 Govt Heavy hitter. We recommend this for elk, bear, or brush-busting performance.

Q: Can I use modern ammo in older lever actions?
A: Be careful. High-pressure loads (like +P) are great in modern Marlins or Henrys, but can be dangerous in vintage antiques. Always check your manual.
Q: Why is everyone buying .357 lever guns?
