The case neck is annealed to soften the material, which prevents gas leaks and ensures the case holds the bullet securely for at least 10 years without cracking from material aging. As you move further down the case body, the hardness increases to prevent unnecessary stretching, while still maintaining a balance that avoids the risk of cracking. Around the primer pocket, the brass becomes even firmer, with the hardness nearly doubling compared to the neck area. This variation in hardness is achieved through precise processing, where large, soft grains are broken down into smaller, harder grains and then, during annealing, the grains grow larger, reducing hardness for optimal strength and durability.
