Two years after launching the compact .458 Win Mag, Winchester introduced two new cartridges with distinctive bullet diameters, both named for their true dimensions. While the .264 Winchester Magnum initially showed promise, it didn't quite meet expectations and gradually fell out of favor. In contrast, its larger counterpart, the .338 Winchester Magnum, has become a favorite among hunters for large American game. Its popularity is well-deserved, as it combines heavy bullets with moderate velocity, delivering controlled expansion and impressive penetration, key traits of an effective cartridge. The moderate velocity also means recoil is manageable for most hunters. Although the .338's trajectory is slightly higher compared to faster big bore magnums, this rarely impacts hunting success. Despite not being a true magnum in the sense of using the slowest burning powders, the .338 Winchester Magnum remains an excellent choice for versatile big game hunting worldwide, from deer to the largest antelope.
