Developed in 1957 for Remington's model 740 Autoloader, the .280 Remington is essentially a .30-06 case necked down to accept 7mm bullets, with a slightly moved shoulder to prevent accidental chambering in .270 Winchester rifles. However, this design flaw allows for potential confusion with .270 cartridges being loaded into a .280 Remington, risking dangerous case ruptures and gas leaks. A more effective solution might have been to enlarge the shoulder diameter. Despite this, the .280 Remington is a highly versatile cartridge, well-suited for hunting across the USA, Europe and much of Africa. It offers a broad range of bullet options for hand loaders, with lighter bullets making it an excellent choice for varmint hunting. In 1979 and 1980, Remington briefly marketed this cartridge as the 7mm Remington Express, but the .280 Remington name was reinstated due to confusion.
