Contrary to popular belief, the 6.5x55mm Swedish was not developed by Mauser but was created by a joint Norwegian and Swedish military commission and introduced as the standard military cartridge in both countries in 1894. It has proven to be an exceptionally effective all-round cartridge ever since. Over a century later, it remains the standard for competition shooting and is one of the most popular hunting cartridges across Scandinavia. Having taken down a dozen moose, over 50 caribou and triple that number of roe deer with the 6.5x55, it continues to be my top choice for mixed European hunting. The reasons for its enduring popularity are clear. Its moderate velocity and long bullet ensure mild recoil and deep penetration, key factors for accurate shooting and quick kills, leading to successful hunts. Properly constructed bullets make it suitable for all game from grouse to moose. The 6.5x55mm Swedish effectiveness is well-documented, with tens of thousands of moose harvested each season in Norway and Sweden. For roe deer, which typically weigh around 70 lb, a 140 grain bullet with a moderate load provides instant kills with minimal meat damage. The same bullet type is suitable for whitetails and caribou, though increased velocity can be used for a flatter trajectory if desired. For moose, heavier bullets (140 - 160 grains) at maximum velocity are preferred, while for grouse and capercaillies, a 100 - 120 grain bullet is ideal for achieving the flattest possible trajectory at ranges often exceeding 200 yd.
