Shot Show Day 4 - Lead Star Arms AK47 Barrage

Share:

Lead Star Arms has a rock-solid reputation in the competitive shooting world for hand-building top quality pistol caliber carbines and AR-15 platform rifles.

This year at SHOT Show, Lead Star steps foot into the AK market with the unveiling of an AK-47 that meets all the precise demands that must be met to carry the Lead Star name.

Today we introduce you to the Lead Star AK-47 Barrage.

The AK in the following photos has a custom cerakote from C&B Quality Coatings. While the Lead Star AK-47 Barrage will not come standard with this design, C&B is happy to replicate for you at a very reasonable price.

Chambered in 7.62 x 39 the Lead Star AK Barrage carries a 4140 forged bolt, carrier and front trunnion while adding design elements that make you instantly aware you're handling a cream of the crop rifle.

Beginning at the back end Lead Star employs the MFT Battlelink Minimalist stock that attaches to a milspec buffer tube system.

The buttstock attaches via Lead Star's AK to AR buffer tube adapter that includes a QD mount on both the end plate and sides.

If you're anything like me, the sights on the AK are one of its biggest drawbacks.

Lead Star chose to put a rear peep sight on its AK-47 Barrage to make aiming easier and increase the sight radius.

Take a look at the safety lever on Lead Star's AK-47 and you'll notice the extension on the lever and its proximity to the trigger finger. Lead Star adds to its list of improvements by pulling a bit of metal out of the safety lever and leaving just enough space to allow it to pull double duty as a bolt-catch.

Notice the ALG AK Trigger making an appearance. That trigger will come stock on the Lead Star AK-47 Barrage.

The dust cover carries a picatinny rail for the addition of red dots and other accessories.

The 4150V black nitride barrel hosts a combo gas block, and while Strike Industries JCOMP muzzle brake finishes off the show rifle, Lead Star will be producing its own brake for rifles as they enter production.

I’ve always been an AK fan and happy to see US companies getting into the platform. While the peep sight is nice - I find it doesn’t offer range adjustments like the standard AK leaf sight. I’m not sure how much the sight radius is extended either considering the gas block combo sight but the range adjustment trade off has always been hard for me to accept with TWS or Krebs. The components of the AK/AKM are usually the dealbreakers for die hard AK lovers. It’s nice to see forged trunnions and hopefully the barrel is top notch given the complexity of changing a barrel on an AK. An adjustable gas piston like KNS Precision would be icing on the cake. Most AK variants are over gassed and amazing how these can run when properly tuned. Also to accommodate a suppression device without too much gas. ALG triggers have been a huge improvement for AK fans and glad to see them incorporated. I’m not sure what muzzle device is being offered but another area where the 7.62x39 can be tamed. Any plans for 5.45x39 (AK74) or 6.5 Grendel versions? To me there’s a significant void in the AK world when it comes to US produced modern calibers.
