Parts & Tools Used:

Hey guys, what's going on? Tye from Palmetto State Armory here with another quick tip video. Today we're going to be going over how to swap out the trigger in your PSA AR-15 lower receiver

To begin, let's start by going over some of the tools we're going to need to complete this project. First is a bench block. These assist us in actually removing the pins, and the fire control group from the lower. Second is a punch. Today I'll be using a 1/8" punch. Third, is a hammer just to help us drive it. And last but not least, is one of my favorite tools from the PSA custom series specialty tool kit. This is the hammer and trigger install pin. We'll get into more on this later.

Removing the Hammer and Trigger Pins [00:58]

All right. To begin, we're going to start by removing the hammer pin. To do this. We're just going to grab our punch and drive it out. Now, one of my favorite things about using a punch with this is that it's actually going to hold the hammer in when you go to remove it. So we're just going to grab a hold of the hammer, pull the punch out. It'll pop right out. Now, time to remove the trigger pin. The same process as before, we're going to grab our punch and just drive it out.

Now, this is going to be a little different. We want to reach in and get ahold of the disconnector and then pull the punch out. This will just keep it from shooting off. When you go to pull it. Now, to remove the actual trigger itself, just slide it forward and lift it out.

Now we can begin the install on our new trigger. To begin we're just going to remove the lower and the bench block. We'll come back to those later. Now for today's trigger swap, we're going to be upgrading to the ALG Defense Combat Trigger. Inside the package, you'll get the trigger itself, the hammer, the trigger spring, the hammer spring, the disconnector, the disconnector spring, as well as two pins.

Trigger Assembly [02:24]

To begin assembly, we're going to start with the trigger itself. We're going to grab the trigger and the trigger spring. We're going to take the trigger spring like this, and slide it on. I found the easiest way is to take these rings and simply loop them over the ears. When assembled, it should look like this. Next, we'll grab the disconnector spring, and there's a little hole that you can see that is cut out into the actual trigger itself. We're just going to take the fat end and slide it right in. Then we'll grab the disconnector and the disconnector will just sit right there until we're ready to install it. Now, for the hammer we're going to grab it, the hammer spring, and we're just going to feed these ears right into those holes.

This is how the hammer should look when it's ready to be installed. Now we're going to set these to the side and grab our bench block and lower and begin assembly.

Installing the New Trigger [3:30]

Now that we got our lower receiver back in place, we're going to grab our trigger assembly and we're going to simply slide it right in, be sure to keep a hold of the disconnector because you don't want it to become detached. Once we have everything seated, we're going to grab that trigger install tool I was talking about earlier. We're going to take the pointed end and put it into the hole. This is going to help us keep everything seated and in place when we go to install the trigger pin. We're going to grab our trigger pin, slide it in, and I'm just going to start tapping it in.

Now you want to make sure everything's aligned when you go to finish the install. Right now, this one's sticking out just a little bit. We're just going to push it the rest of the way in and make sure it's seated correctly. We'll remove the trigger install pin from the block, and now we're ready to move on to the hammer install.

Hammer Installation [04:25]

Now be patient here. The hammer can be a little more challenging to install versus the trigger. To begin, we're going to grab the hammer. We're going to slide it in. We're then gonna a push it forward and using our install tool, capture it.

Now that we've got it in, we're going to take one of our hammer pins and we're going to get it into place. We're going to drive it home, remove the install tool, and make sure it's seated correctly. We want to make sure everything's lined up for this.

Now that everything's in place, check and make sure that all your pins are flush and that everything's where it needs to be.

Complete a Functions Check [05:19]

Now, the last thing we're going to do is complete a functions check. To do this we're going to cock the hammer and hold onto it. We're going to flip the selector to safe, and we're going to pull the trigger. It doesn't fire. We're going to switch it to semi, and keeping hold of the hammer, we're going to pull the trigger. We're going to ease that hammer up, not letting it slap the receiver. You don't want to let it hit the receiver. If it does, it could potentially cause damage to it. Now we're going to cock it again and this time holding the trigger, we're going to fire, cock it back and make sure the trigger resets. As long as it does, you're done. Can put your selector back on safe and reinstall the lower receiver back onto your upper.

This is a very good tip. It puts the process of a build in a clearer perspective. I agree with Mr Morgan about providing a view from the top to show how it looks before removing the pin, how it looks with out the trigger and hammer and possibly a view of the complete assembly. It was very interesting to hear that you should hold the hammer and release it slowly after pulling the trigger so the hammer won’t damage anything. When the upper is installed does its position keep the hammer from damaging the sides of the lower? Thank you very much.

Yes, with the upper attached you are safe to dry fire the AR as long as the bolt carrier group and charging handle are installed as well. The BCG, in particular the firing pin and bolt, prevent any damage from occurring.
